Homogeneous hydrogenation reactions are usually carried out in org. solvents but Oehme [1] has shown that e.g. Hydrogenation reactions can be transferred to water if surfactants are used as solubilizer. At surfactant concns. higher than the crit. micelle concn. (cmc), the surfactant monomers form micelles (nanoreactors) in which the catalyst can be embedded and where the reaction takes place. After reaction the micelles and therefore the catalyst can be sepd. from the reaction mixt. by an ultrafiltration membrane. For the development of a continuous hydrogenation process, more information about the hydrogenation in micellar solns. and the filtration of micellar solns. is needed. In this contribution we discuss parameters that influence the process performance and show examples for the continuous rhodium catalyzed hydrogenation reaction in micellar soln.
