This paper is discussing possible enhancements and limitations for reading concepts of children up to twelve years in digital books and reading applications. First of all it is asked how interactive digital books can be defined at all and which technical preconditions are currently existent. Then the paper describes the actual diffusion of interactive E-Books and reading applications on the German book market by analyzing the websites of 44 publishing houses and their supply of digital reading media. The results are then used for outlining guidelines for text- and user-interface-design of such media. Finally these found outlines are compared to reading strategies of children and evaluated as enhancements and limitations of reading.
