The first printed newspapers develop at the beginning of the 17th century. This work analyses the functions of newspapers within the canon of already established media, the organisation of newspaper communication and the typographical design. Between the printed newspaper and the already established media (letter newspapers, fair relations and pamphlets) there often exist only gradual differences. The organisation of newspaper communication always shows differences where political power holders exert their influence on the printing process. Concerning the business forms, a differentiation according to producers took place early on: printer-publisher, court printer and postmaster printer. Creatively, the first printed newspapers distinguish themselves through a variety of forms. In addition to this, various ways of reading, like selective and informing reading, are suggested to the reader through differences on both the macro and micro typographical levels.
