In current academic discourses the comic as medium is reflected in numerous desiderata. Despite frequent theoretical approaches, this particular field lacks empirical studies. The following paper proposes a debate whether or not an agreeable definition of the comic as medium is adoptable at all. Additionally, it focuses on the reader's experience as well as the reading research in a practical approach. Alongside the different influences on the recipient, the communicator and the medium had to be validated. In order to create a valuable basis, a reading model for comics in accordance with Christmann and Groeben and an effect model for comics based on the dynamic-transactional approach were developed. The two models were verified in a quasi-experiment with a selected group of test readers. The theory of this research thesis assumes that the reader's familiarity with the medium, the specifics of the comic and the author-reader-relationship is affected by previous reading experiences. The case study has proven a certain degree of correlation between author-reader-relationship and reading experience – vice versa the recipient has an equal influence on the communicator. Although the recipient's reading experience was of considerable importance in this limited empirical approach, a decisive effect has not been proven. For more representative results a broad-based study on the topic of the reception and effects of comics are necessary and desirable.
