Abstract

Highly disperse powders are increasingly used in industrial applications. For example in the pharmaceutical industry fine and finest particles are of great interest, since particles with grain sizes of several microns can be inhaled and deposited into the alveoli of the lung. As further example for the industrial application of finest powders the powder coating technique can be mentioned, which enables the production of extreme thin lacquer films. Fine and finest particles show special physical properties. With decreasing particles size the influence of the van der Waals interaction in comparison to other forces like the gravity force increases significantly. Therefore the particles stick to each other. This leads to production problems, e.g., caking, agglomeration and a reduced flowability, since fine powders agglomerate and easily stick to surfaces. By means of appropriate conditioning processes the product properties of the powders to be treated can be considerably improved. If the particles are coated with even smaller nano-particles, the nanos act as spacer between the particles reducing their mutual attraction forces. Thereby on the one hand the solids handling is improved and on the other hand a stable solid mixture is generated. © 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
