Because of calcified skeleton of the Upper Triassic reef builder Spongiomorpha ramosa Frech it was assigned more than the last 100 years to the family Spongiomorphidae interpreting as Coral or Hydrozoa. During the last years it was attributed to the coralline sponges of the group “Inozoa”. In a relatively well preserved specimen from the Upper Triassic reef carbonates of Peleponnes, Greece, dendroclone spicules, however, replaced in calcite were found. These types of spicules allowed the assignment of this organism to the order Orchocladina Rauff. Years ago similar spicules were found also in Stromatomorpha californica Smith, a sister genus of the family Spongiomorphidae. Stromatomorpha was attributed also to the order Orchocladian, family Anthaspidellidae Miller.
