Sonography is an imaging technique that has been widely used in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine since the introduction of highly sophisticated portable ultrasound instruments. The production of good quality images depends on the physical interactions of ultrasound with body tissues and a basic understanding of the acoustic principles involved in the acquisition of ultrasound images is essential for sonographers. This article gives an overview of the underlying technology which is used to produce ultrasound signals, receive the echo signals and further process the echo signals into grey scale pixels to render an image of the acoustic cross-sectional plane.
