Characterizing material properties with a high degree of precision requires very accurate sensors, which means that the properties of the sensor itself must also be accurately characterized. Simulation allows the properties of elements of the test equipment to be calculated in isolation or be integrated into the simulation model for the test set-up, and allows the design of the sensor to be optimized. This article will demonstrate how CST® STUDIO SUITE® was used to simulate and optimize a coaxial-microstrip transition for a material characterization measurement system, including the effect of the probes themselves, and analyze the effect of surface roughness on the properties of the sensor.
