Abstract

This paper provides an automatic gain control (AGC) algorithm applicable in high speed burst communication systems. Since under multipath propagation a common AGC can severely degrade the performance of the frame synchronization algorithms used in packet transmission systems, a new interface is particularly designed to perform automatic gain control in conjunction with the applied timing and coarse frequency synchronization. We simulated our AGC interface in a Single Carrier (SC) system with Frequency Domain Equalization (FDE) in the presence of noise and multipath fading, but the techniques are also applicable to multi-carrier systems as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Simulation results let conclude that the applied synchronization algorithms in combination with our AGC interface do not need a preamble as long as the short preamble specified in IEEE802.11g to yield an optimal system performance.
