Abstract

In order to improve the operational reliability of passive backscattering RFID (radio frequency identification) transponders, the design of low-loss integrated circuits and the implementation of novel concepts for efficient energy scavenging are an emerging task. This article deals with general considerations regarding self-sustaining transponder devices using the RF power rectification approach and the backscatter modulation technique. We present important fundamentals and limitations of the passive integrated RF frontend architecture.
