Abstract

An important step into the market for Galileo is the intime availability of large-scale integrated combined Galileo/GPS receiver chipsets for consumer applications. This is the main idea behind the HIGAPS project – the development of the concept for an integrated combined Galileo/GPS receiver that is specially tailored for location based services and consumer market applications - preferably for pedestrian and vehicular users. The HIGAPS project is a national project, commonly funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport, and Technology and the German Aerospace Center DLR. The consortium consists of Ifen GmbH, Infineon Technologies AG, the Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Circuits in Erlangen, the Institute of Geodesy and Navigation of the University FAF Munich and the Chair of Electronics of the University Erlangen- Nuremberg. The first part of the paper focuses on the main concept and the initial architecture of the future integrated combined Galileo/GPS receiver for location based services and consumer applications. Particularly the integration into a mobile phone platform introduces challenges e.g. due to cost constraints and power consumption. The actual status of the project will be presented. This includes an analysis of the reception and boundary conditions that lead to the development of the presented receiver architecture. The development platforms are presented and an outlook on the future work in this project is given. In the second part of the paper a static and kinematic experiment are shown to demonstrate the performance of the proposed snap-shot approach for the HIGAPS receiver.
