The invention relates to absorption medium and process for the absorption of CO2 from a gas mixt. The absorption of CO2 from a gas mixt. by bringing the gas mixt. in contact with an absorption medium, which contains water, 20 to 60 wt.% of amine and 0.01 to 0.1 mol/kg org. salts comprising a cation having quaternary nitrogen or phosphorus atom and an anion having a carbon-bonded, non-sterically hindered primary or secondary amino group, enables a high wt.-based CO2 absorption capacity in the cyclic operation of absorption and desorption. Bis(hydroxyethyl)dimethylammonium β-alaninate was prepd. by the reaction of bis(hydroxyethyl)dimethylammonium hydroxide with β-alanine and showed to be suitable as said org. salt for CO2 absorption.
