Project details
Short description
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it. About 8-15% of individuals with a uterus are affected, making endometriosis the second most common gynecological condition. People with endometriosis often report severe pain before and during menstruation, as well as during sexual intercourse. The condition can cause many other symptoms that affect both physical and mental health (e.g., depression or anxiety), significantly reducing quality of life (e.g., social withdrawal, decreased work performance.
Preliminary results suggest that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) may be helpful in reducing the burden of endometriosis. Therefore, we have developed an internet-based self-help program (the Ed.iTh program) aimed at improving the quality of life for people with endometriosis. The program is based on CBT and consists of eight lessons, which cover strategies for managing pain, reducing stress, and addressing negative thoughts.
The goal of this project is to determine how well the program helps improve quality of life. We also want to investigate which factors influence how well the program works, how satisfied participants are, and why some participants drop out of the study early. Through this project, we aim to gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of CBT programs in supporting people with endometriosis and contribute to improving their care.
Scientific Abstract
In this research project, we are investigating the efficacy of the EdiTh program – an internet-based cognitive-behavioral intervention (iCBT) for individuals with endometriosis – in a randomized controlled trial. The aim is to evaluate the efficacy of the training in improving endometriosis-related quality of life. Additionally, we aim to identify factors influencing effectiveness, participant satisfaction, and reasons for early dropout from the intervention.
Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory condition that affects 8-15% of individuals with a uterus in their reproductive years. It leads to a range of physical and psychological symptoms and can result in significant functional limitations. The developed iCBT consists of eight lessons that address topics such as pain management, stress regulation, and the cognitive restructuring of dysfunctional thoughts.
