Hot Forming and Quenching (HFQ) is a promising method to produce lightweight automotive parts from high strength Aluminum alloys like AA7075. However, during forming, significant transfer of the Aluminum on to the forming tools has been reported. The resulting adhesive wear deteriorates the quality of the formed components and the forming tools and must therefore be minimized. While the use of lubrication has been an accepted method for reducing wear, lubricants present ecological and economic disadvantages. Tool coatings with high temperature resistance and significant hardness have exhibited good tribological properties. The scope of the project is to investigate and compare the tribological potential of suitable tool coatings (ZrN, AlCrTiN, ta-C, a-C:H) under HFQ conditions using deep drawing and strip drawing experiments.
