Scientific Abstract

The aim of the PEGASUS project is to develop production processes for surfaces that are suitable for series production and which, in combination with adapted lubricants, minimize friction losses. This could lead to annual energy savings of more than 1 billion €/a in the automotive sector in Germany as well as a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. All materials and manufacturing processes must be converted into a condition suitable for mass production with regard to quality, costs and reliability of the tribological systems.
The possible modification processes of metal surfaces including subsequent coatings with friction-reducing materials, together with adapted lubricants, open up completely new dimensions. In particular, specially modified carbon layers are being developed.
