Cold bulk forming offers higher technological, economic and ecological potential than alternative production methods for the mass production of micro gears. Due to scale effects, high tool stresses and handling problems, cold forming is not possible for modules m<0.175. This project investigates bulk microforming from sheet metal for the production of micro gears with a module of m = 0.1. During this process, the sheet metal strip serves both as a semi-finished product and as a handling aid. In the first forming stage, a wheel blank is extruded from sheet metal, which is then geared in a second stage by lateral extrusion. Results from the first series of tests show that the process strategy allows a major reduction of tool stresses. It will also be investigated if the process-induced grain refinement can prevent scale effects.
